This clinically relevant and evidence-based course will provide attendees with an understanding of normal occlusal development and commonly encountered orthodontic problems. Knowledge gained from this course will assist clinicians in the diagnosis, management and/or onward referral for patients with a developing malocclusion. The Australian Society of Orthodontists recommends orthodontic assessment for patients around the age of 8 years. Diagnosis of developmental anomalies is vital for the institution of appropriate interceptive treatment. There are certain ages when orthodontic screening is important for the growing patient. Differentiating between normal and abnormal dental development allows clinicians to provide appropriate management for a developing malocclusion, which may involve periodic monitoring, interception and/or specialist referral.Knowing when, where and how to look forms the foundation of appropriate orthodontic diagnosis and management. A variety of developing anomalies can be detected in the mixed dentition stage, some of which may be justifiably intercepted, whereas some are best monitored from a cost-benefit perspective.
