Dr Robert Turnbull has a practice dedicated to providing visiting dental sedation services to many dental surgeries across Sydney and New South Wales, so he understands the strengths and limitations of dental teams and helps them to manage their toughest patients on a daily basis. As a Dental Board of Australia endorsed Dental Sedationist, he undergoes annual re-endorsement training in the management of Medical Emergencies, including two days of high fidelity simulation of emergencies.

Robert is a current, Australian Resuscitation Council, Advanced Life Support (Level 2) qualified practitioner, ensuring he is current in the latest concepts in resuscitation and Advanced Life Support.

He is on the Council of the Australian Society of Dental Anaesthesiology, responsible for managing their Annual Scientific Meeting and Emergency Management Training. He also teaches Intravenous Sedation and Management of Medical Emergencies, Anxiety and Pain Management, Relative Analgesia and local anaesthesia to dental undergraduate and postgraduate students in the IV Sedation Department of the University of Sydney at Westmead Hospital and Charles Sturt University where he is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer.

From this experience, Dr Turnbull has developed the system of flow charts and cheat sheets used in this emergency program – applicable to the dental teams, and based on the protocols used by ASDA in its sedationist re-endorsement courses, using the protocols used by the ARC.

For the first nine years of his career, Robert was a Dental Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force, where he gained valuable experience in training, and the management of trauma and medical emergencies in the on-base, deployed and aero-medical evacuation environments, in addition to Forensic Dentistry involvement in Disaster Victim Identification. He has fifteen years of experience in general dentistry working all around Australia, gaining valuable experience in general and emergency dentistry, medical emergencies, and the management of small and large, fixed and portable dental teams.
