Course overview
This course will enable participants to become competent in the administration of Relative Analgesia in clinical practice. The course is also an excellent refresher for dentists wishing to update their theory and practical skills in the delivery of Nitrous Oxide Sedation (Relative Analgesia). Participants will be given the opportunity to administer Nitrous Oxide sedation, and to experience for themselves the effects of Relative Analgesia in a safe and controlled environment.
This is a course meets the standards of the International Federation of Dental Anaesthesiology Societies.
The morning session consists of lectures:

- Advantages/Disadvantages
- Indications/Contraindications
- Complications
- Sterilising
- Regulations
- Equipment
The afternoon session:
- Practical Sessions
- Breathing circuit
- Practical examples
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the completion of this course the participant should:
- Know the basic respiratory physiology, including the uptake and distribution of gases
- Know the pharmacology, and physiology of Nitrous Oxide
- Know the indications, contraindications, and complications of inhalation analgesia
- Know the characteristics of the Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen’s different delivery systems
- Know the clinical protocols and technique for the use of Nitrous Oxide/Oxygen Sedation
- Be competent in their abilities to deliver effective and safe nitrous oxide sedation.

Dr Greg Mahoney
BDSc, GradDipClinDent, MSc(Dent), PhD, FADI, FPFA and President of ASDA
Dr Mahoney has a full time private practice dealing with the anxious patient and has been involved in sedation research for the past 25 years. He is a highly experienced dentist with over 40 years experience and holds a number of key positions in prominent dental associations in Australia. His ongoing education has kept him at the forefront of new developments in dentistry such as ‘sleep dentistry’ and developing better methods of predicting when patients are likely to develop dental issues between normally scheduled dental appointments.
