Course Overview

Over the past decade there has been substantial growth in technological advancements that have impacted the field of endodontics. Most of which have improved treatment outcomes, simplified endodontic procedures, and reduced patient chair time. To meet the challenges of clinical demands in the technology age, participants will learn how to apply a variety of innovative technologies to produce more predictable outcomes. 

This course is targeted at practitioners who are wanting to improve clinical results, efficiency, scope of practice, and professional satisfaction with endodontics. 

A portion of the course will be devoted to hands on exercises where the attendees will learn to apply a variety of technological advancements in a systematic approach. The topics that will be covered are:  

  • Don’t practice in the dark ages - why technology matters
  • Assessment and diagnosis: discuss appropriate methods for making an accurate diagnosis using correct terminology
  • Cutting-edge instrumentation including heat treated nickel titanium rotary instrumentation and super flexible files that respect the canal anatomy
  • Obturation simplified: the hydraulic condensation technique using a master cone and bioceramic sealer
  • Treatment options for the compromised tooth: including the placement of a dual cured core
  • When to refer? Analyse difficult case scenarios and select which cases should be referred to a specialist
  • Microscope instruction and hands-on experience with the microscope
 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Analyse available technology to create a suitable treatment plan for the endodontic case 
  • Assess and manage treatment of a compromised tooth
  • Operate a variety of instruments and materials 
  • Demonstrate and explain the role of operating the microscope 

 

Presenter biography

Associate Professor Dr James A. Wealleans


Dr. James A. Wealleans is originally from Christchurch New Zealand, he is married and has 2 children.  In 2006 James graduated with honors from Nova Southeastern College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. A year later he completed an Advanced General Dentistry Residency in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In 2010, Dr. Wealleans graduated Endodontic Residency from the prestigious University of Texas Health Science Center and Wilford Hall Medical Center, in San Antonio, Texas.

James is an American Board-Certified Endodontist, an accomplishment that only 20% of in the specialty obtain. Dr. Wealleans served as the Director of Endodontic Residency Training and Education from 2013-2018 at the Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. James has held teaching appointments as Associate Professor with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and Assistant Professor with University of Texas Health Sciences, San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Wealleans has authored over 10 published research papers and serves as a scientific advisor for the Journal of Endodontics. In 2017 James invented guided endodontic microsurgery, which he holds 2 US patents. He has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally. In 2018, after serving 20 honorable years in the Air Force, James retired as a Lt. Colonel.

Recently, Dr. Wealleans moved to Sydney where he devotes his time practicing endodontics on Sydney’s Northshore and the Central Coast.
