This hands-on course is designed for Dentists.

Course Overview

This course is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform minor oral surgical procedures. Facilitated by two highly experienced Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons who will encourage participants to apply their basic knowledge of oral surgery by partaking in multiple practical exercises. 

The course will cover: 

  • Comprehensive patient examination and diagnosis 
  • Treatment planning 
  • Equipment orientation 
  • Procedure outline and practical application: 
    - Drainage of intra-oral collections
    - Tooth sectioning and elevation 
    - Difficult wisdom tooth removal 
    - Guttering
    - Division elevation maxillary, mandibular molars
    - Root tip retrieval
    - Removal of division of erupted dentition premolar, canines and incisors
    - Flap design 
    - Suturing
  • Discussion of potential complications and adverse outcomes 

Participants will use specialised Maxillary and Mandibular Anatomical Models which reliably reflect normal anatomy and allow dissection, bone removal sectioning and flap repair. Upon completion of this course the models can be kept for future reference.

This course is a preliminary course to Advanced Oral Surgery.

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Undertake a thorough patient assessment to create a tailored treatment planned 
  • Preform a range of surgical techniques
  • Identify possible complications and provide solutions as to how to avoid them  

 

Presenter/s biography

Dr Edward Hsu
BDSc (Hon), MBBS, FRACDS (OMS)


Dr Edward Hsu obtained his dental qualification with honours from the UQ in 1999 and medical qualification also from UQ in 2003. Following advanced surgical training rotating through most of the major hospitals in Queensland, Dr Hsu obtained the qualification of FRACDS (OMS) and is registered as a specialist oral and maxillofacial surgeon with both the Australian Dental Board and the Australian Medical Board. Dr Hsu then completed additional surgical fellowship training in one of the busiest tertiary referral hospitals in London, UK.


A/Prof Anthony Lynham
BMed (Hons) FRACDS(OMS) FRCS Ed.

Anthony completed his surgical training in Maxillofacial surgery in Queensland. A Fellowship visit to Switzerland enabled him to gain further experience in this fascinating surgical field. Dr Lynhams’ experience includes dento-alveolar surgery, dental implants, wisdom teeth, facial trauma and reconstruction, sleep apnoea surgery, orthognathic surgery, bone grafting and oro-facial pathology. He has a special interest in orbital surgery , trauma surgery and post traumatic facial reconstructive surgery.

Anthony has returned to practice after serving as a senior government minister. It was here that significant legislative reforms were implemented to lessen the incidence of trauma in our society. He now serves as clinical director at the Jamieson Trauma Institute.
