Introduction to Oral Surgery
This hands-on course is designed for dentists with limited oral surgery experience, looking to improve their confidence.

Course Overview

Oral surgery is often confronting, especially in a patient who is experiencing pain and may have some complexities in medical history or in the proposed surgical procedure. This course is designed to provide those with limited oral surgery experience with the opportunity to improve their confidence when practicing general surgical techniques. 

Participants will be able to hone their skills under the close supervision of two highly skilled Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons. This course will cover:

  • Introduction to surgical instruments 
  • Management of medical conditions.

This hands-on course will use anatomical models and cadaveric animal specimens to practice the following: 

  • Suturing techniques 
  • Surgical techniques (including, but not limited to guttering, division elevation maxillary, flap design, root tip retrieval, abscess drainage). 

 

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to: 

  • Demonstrate correct use of various surgical instruments including the application of root retrieval instruments 
  • Assess a patient’s medical history and appropriately manage any complexities
  • Identify and address any gaps in the basic understanding of suturing or surgical techniques 
  • Accurately preform basic surgical procedures covered in the course including guttering, tooth division and erupted dentition extraction. 

At the completion of this course, participants may be interested in attending Intermediate Oral Surgery; the next course in this practical series where participants perform multiple minor oral surgical procedures. 

 

Presenter/s biography

A/Prof Anthony Lynham
BMed (Hons) FRACDS(OMS) FRCS Ed.

Anthony completed his surgical training in Maxillofacial surgery in Queensland. A Fellowship visit to Switzerland enabled him to gain further experience in this fascinating surgical field. Dr Lynhams’ experience includes dento-alveolar surgery, dental implants, wisdom teeth, facial trauma and reconstruction, sleep apnoea surgery, orthognathic surgery, bone grafting and oro-facial pathology. He has a special interest in orbital surgery , trauma surgery and post traumatic facial reconstructive surgery.

Anthony has returned to practice after serving as a senior government minister. It was here that significant legislative reforms were implemented to lessen the incidence of trauma in our society. He now serves as clinical director at the Jamieson Trauma Institute.

 

Dr Arthur Bilski
MBBS(Adel) BDS(Adel) FRACGP FRACDS(OMS) FRCS(Ed)

Dr Arthur Bilski originally qualified as a doctor with a Medical Degree (MBBS) from the University of Adelaide.

Following Internship Arthur worked as a Resident Medical Officer in Surgery in Australia and the UK.
He then obtained the Surgical Primary Examination from the Royal Australian College of Surgeons (RACS) and also qualified as a GP (General Medical Practitioner) obtaining the Fellowship of Royal Australian College of General Practitioners -FRACGP

He obtained his Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from the University of Adelaide

Arthur trained in Oral and Maxillo-Facial Surgery in Queensland and obtained the Specialist Fellowship -FRACDS(OMS) and also the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh -FRCS(Ed).
 
Dr Arthur Bilski is fully recognized and registered as a Specialist Surgeon by the Medical Board of Australia, Medicare, Department of Veteran Affairs, HIC and Private Health Funds.
